Ashley Madison 'married dating' site grew to 70 million users in 2020

“Married Dating” thrived during the pandemic. Ashley Madison, the website that connects people with one another, said its membership had exceeded 70 million by the end of 2020, an increase of 5.5 million from the previous year.

During the coronavirus, the website grew an average of over 15.2 thousand new members, or 466,233 per month, Paul Keable, Ashley Madison’s chief strategy officer, told VentureBeat in an interview.

“It is a significant internal milestone for us, but it continues to show the profitability of the business and an interest in the idea that monogamy is not the answer to all problems,” said Keable.

The site’s slogan is, “Life is short. Having an affair. ”And despite the fact that it was harder than ever to have an affair while bans were being enforced, the site has continued to grow. A poll published in September found that people during times of uncertainty and stress Seeking affairs as a form of external emotional support.

The 70 million number is more than double the number of users Ashley Madison had in July 2015 when hackers stole data on 32 million fraudulent spouses. The leakage of sensitive data led spouses to discover that their significant other was cheating, causing divorces, breakups, and suicides. The hackers also revealed that Ashley Madison used bots posing as attractive young women to entice men into getting more involved with the site.

The vast majority of Ashley Madison members have said they stay married through affairs. To understand the reasons for choosing infidelity over divorce during a pandemic and the implications for marriage in the future, the company conducted several surveys among its members. The results reinforced Ashley Madison’s belief that marriage is a pragmatic arrangement that has inherent value, although often one partner does not offer enough love, support, or desire.

Following the widespread shelter-in-place assignments that began in March 2020, the number of registrations with Ashley Madison increased. The company found that although many members were quarantined with their spouse, the urge to cheat was higher than ever.

“What people were telling us was that because of the isolation and locking aspects and all these different things, they needed an outlet,” Keable said. “And for a number of reasons, for the vast majority of people who have been in monogamous relationships, the pandemic is either exposing existing cracks or deepening existing cracks in the relationship that have been really difficult to fix.”

He added, “If I had a problem with my wife in the pre-pandemic world, then I can go to the bar and have a beer with the boys, or go to an event or any other place that I could distract myself from this problem. And we could cover that. And that was taken away from us. We really didn’t have all the opportunities to chat and distract ourselves from the problems at hand. “

Ashley Madison allows women to register for free and charge men when they want to contact people on the site. But when women contact other women, Ashley Madison charges them. On average, for every seven active female accounts, there are 10 male customer accounts. However, this ratio is very different from country to country. In the US there are 10 men for every six women available. However, more women than men register in France, Colombia, Portugal, Hong Kong and Brazil.

Large areas of growth during the year were the United States, Brazil, Canada, the United Kingdom and Mexico.

Ashley Madison does not disclose her earnings, but Keable said the number was unchanged in 2020 compared to 2019. While revenue increased as the number of users increased, there was a pause in the spring during the initial lockdown. Numbers also drop out during the holiday season, as is typical, he said.

At the start of 2021, the numbers are the best the company has seen since 2015.

“We have really built a robust kind of foundation that continues to grow,” he said. “And I think we will see significant growth this year through the end of the year. We have 21,000 new members per day at the beginning of the year. But we forecast by the end of the year that if the plans we have go according to plan, a little over 30,000 people a day will likely join. “

Keable said another survey found that people value physical contact with their affair partners while they value time with their spouses. About 75% of scammers believe that failure to consider each other’s dominant love language is responsible for the lack of intimacy in their marriage, the survey said.

Most of our members tell Ashley Madison that they love their partners or spouses, Keable said. He added that they are not trying to get out of their relationship, they are just trying to meet a need that is missing.

As for the new members, Keable said the millennial generation is starting to sign up.

Keable said Ashley Madison will expand into new markets in 2021. He noted that the company saw a surge in registrations in Taiwan last year as the country changed a strict adultery law. With no new marketing, Ashley Madison saw 120,000 people sign up in a week.
